Project Description
I created “A Guide to Hiking Trails in Southwest Missouri,” a 12-page Web site, to provide a comprehensive guide to hiking trails in ten southwest Missouri counties. The Web site includes information about the trails’ difficulty level, accessibility, location, cost, and length. I also included directions to each natural area with separate directions to specific trailheads as needed.
Project Strategies
This Web site fulfilled a requirement for a large Web site in my Writing for the Web course, and the instructor did not place any restrictions on the topic. I decided on my topic because I couldn’t find any comprehensive guides to Missouri hiking trails on the Internet. I discovered that most Web sites on the topic grouped trails by the agency that maintains the trails. However, most users want to find trails in a specific geographical region when they plan a hiking trip. With this in mind, I decided to organize my Web site by county.
In my design, I chose colors that reflect a nature theme and included pictures of the natural areas so that users can picture the area better. I designed the navigation bar in a F-pattern, since users tend to scan pages in that way. I also chunked text throughout the site, providing pertinent headings so that users can scan it easily and find the information they need.
