Project Description
“Creating a Newsletter with Word 2007” is a 31-topic tutorial created in RoboHelp HTML. The project’s aim is to teach the fundamentals of Word 2007 by allowing users to interact with the software and create a project themselves. The accompanying data set includes two images and sample articles that users can use to flesh out their newsletter. By the time users finish the tutorial, they will have created a functional two-page newsletter.
Project Strategies
When I designed the RoboHelp tutorial for my technical writing class, my first priority was to incorporate tasks into the tutorial that would be feasible to a real person who is designing a newsletter. As a result, I researched newsletter design and incorporated my research into the tutorial.
I used a task-oriented approach so that the user would be in the driver’s seat throughout the tutorial. In order to ensure that my tutorial was helpful for users, I also conducted an informal user analysis test. I observed a user in his homes as he went through the software, documenting any questions he had along the way. His observations guided me through the editing process.
I wanted my users to be comfortable with the tutorial, so I formed my table of contents into lessons, to simulate the traditional classroom learning environment that many of my users may be accustomed to. I also provided a review session at the end of the tutorial so users can test their knowledge. To make navigation easier for them, I incorporated several navigation methods, such as embedded links, a search bar, and an index.
